第308期：drop the ball

今天我们来学一个美国英语中的习惯用法：drop the ball. 意思是“犯错”、“失职”。

这个用法来自于球类运动，如棒球、网球等。在这类比赛中，drop the ball的意思是to let the ball get away or fall out of one’s grasp. 这样的话，把球丢掉的选手就会丢分，甚至输掉比赛。所以后来在美国英语中就有了“失职”、“犯错”的引申义。

来看英文释义：

to make a mistake, especially by doing something in a stupid or careless way

If someone drops the ball, they make a mistake or do something silly.

看个例句：

For God’s sake don’t drop the ball on this – we’re relying on you. 拜托，千万别犯错——大伙儿都指望你呢。

*有没有注意到佛老对这个例句的翻译中把for God’s sake翻译成了“拜托”，而不是通常大家见到的“看在上帝的份儿上”？

“看在上帝的份儿上”是一句汉语中完全不存在的舶来鱼，我始终看不惯这种说法，认为毫无意义，语气生硬，洋腔洋调。

需要强调的是，drop the ball在英国英语中也是有的，意思主要是make a mistake,但在美国英语中主要侧重“失职”的意思。

例句：

My boss believes I’ve dropped the ball on the project but it was not really my fault. 我老板认为我在这个项目上失职了，其实不是我的错。
