第356期:no-nonsense

今天我们要学的这个词很简单,no-nonsense,很实用的一个形容词。构词很简单,就是no加上nonsense,一般中间是有一个连字符(hyphen)的,没有连字符的写法过,但不多见


剑桥英语大词典的解释是:

practical and serious, and only interested in doing what is necessary or achieving what is intended, without silly ideas or methods

形容一个人很实在、严肃,只做必要的事说必要的话,从不胡来。规规矩矩,公事公办,干干脆脆,没废话。做事情干脆果断,二话不说,直接搞定。就是这样一种人。

所以no-nonsense形容一个人时是一个很好的褒义词。

柯林斯字典的解释更好。

  • If you describe someone as a no-nonsense person, you approve of the fact that they are efficient, direct, and quite tough

          如果你形容一个人是no-nonsense,意思是你很赞赏这个人的高效、直接和果敢。

  • If you describe something as a no-nonsense thing, you approve of the fact that it is plain and does not have unnecessary parts. 

          如果你形容一件事是no-nonsense,意思是你很赞赏这件事,因为直截了当,没有不必要的内容。

But her no-nonsense approach has won her scores of admirers. (Times 2014)

这是时代周刊2014年某篇文章里的话,说这个女性凭她干练干脆的工作作风赢得了众多追随者。

Her style, is tough and no-nonsense. (The Sun 2008)

她的风格严厉、干练。

而如果一个人喜欢婆婆妈妈唧唧歪歪,做事情推三阻四拖拖拉拉节外生枝,说话没谱满嘴跑火车,又喜欢折腾别人一会儿这样一会儿那样事儿妈,别人会说这个人is full of nonsense. 这种人在职场其实有多很多。

学会no-nonsense这个词吧,是对人很高的一种赞扬。
