Your best foot

To show oneself in the best or most positive way possible; to make a favorable impression.

King John, 1595 :

“Nay, but make haste; the better foot before.”

Ted: I’m so nervous about that job interview that I have tomorrow.

Rufio: Don’t worry. You’ve prepared for
everything. You know all about the company, you’re qualified for the
position, and you have a great outfit ready to wear to the interview.
Put your best foot forward and try your best to be confident.

从上面这个小对话来看,put your best foot forward的意思就相当于make your best effort, try your best.
