去过北海道的朋友大概每个人都买过两样东西。

北海道还有一个好东西不知大家买过没——果冻。
昨晚吃了一口前天从日本带回来的果冻——我的个亲娘啊！
入口即化，叹为观止（请原谅我词汇的贫乏，我只能想到这八个字），之前这辈子吃过的所有果冻都得扔……
我说这东西的英文叫 jello，我一直这么叫它的。老婆说是 jelly，结果一看包装盒——jelly.
其实我说的jello也没错。今天我们就来讲讲果冻的英文——jelly 和jello.
我们先来看果冻到底是种什么东西 – how jelly is made?
Jelly is a preserve made of fruit juice that has been sweetened and set with the help of pectin. It is a soft food that is fruit flavored and a consistency that is very elastic in nature. It is made up mainly of water and fruit juice with gelatin being used for setting.
我简单翻译一下：
Jelly是果汁加糖和果胶后形成的一种果酱。松软，有水果味道，有弹性。主要由水、果汁加明胶塑型而成。
Jelly is a semi solid sweet substance that is made from fruit juice and sugar that is boiled for some time, to bring it to a consistency that is thick enough to retain its shape.
There is another word Jello that is used by people in America, to refer to a product that is very similar to jelly. Jello is a brand of gelatin sold in US with sugar and flavors added to it. 在美国人的概念中，jelly就是jello，这是因为Jell-O是卡夫食品的一个著名品牌，后来就成了果冻的代名词。
• Jelly and Jello are practically the same thing with Jello being a brand name sold in US.
• All Jello is jelly, but not all the jelly is Jello.
小结一下，果冻这种食品的正式英文名称是 jelly. 但由于卡夫食品生产的 Jell-O果冻最出名，所以美国人都把果冻称为 Jello. 是一回事。
小小的果冻，由于赶上了二战后的baby boomer时代，迅速在美国和欧洲走红，因为小孩喜欢吃。
1923年，Genesee Pure Food Company更名为 Jell-O Company
1925年与Postum Cereal, Inc合并，后来又成了General Foods Corporation （通用食品公司）
1989年，飞利浦摩尔斯旗下的这家通用食品与卡夫合并为卡夫食品公司，成为美国最大的食品制造商。
现在Jell-O品牌归卡夫食品所有(Kraft/General Foods)
日常生活中还有一种东西的英文名称大家不要跟果冻搞混了——啫喱。
啫喱的英文是gel，或者 hair gel; 啫喱水就是 gel water。
今天我们讲了果冻的英文是jelly, 美国人一般用品牌指代称为Jello (Jell-O)，弄头发的啫喱是gel.
