第698期：英语里说你是big head不是夸你聪明
小时候有个童谣，或者顺口溜：
大头大头，下雨不愁。
人家有伞，你有大头。
小孩子们这样说的时候其实并没有多少实质的意思，无非就是戏谑的一种说法，嘲笑某个小朋友脑袋大。
汉语中经常说某人头大意思是那个人很聪明。说什么什么事叫人头大，意思是某件事令人烦恼，很棘手。
上面的这两个意思跟我们今天要讲的 big head都不一样。
英语中的 big head一般有三种用法：
- Someone is a big head
- Get/have a big head
- Give someone a big head
这是我们今天要学的主要内容。
如果你形容一个人是一个 big head，意思是那个人觉得自己很牛，很霸道，觉得自己比所有人都能干都聪明。
If you describe someone as a big head, you disapprove of them because they think they are very clever and know everything. （Collins）
例句：
He has gotten a little success, and a big head to go with it. 他取得了一点点小成绩就变得自大起来很难相处了。
He is such a big head. He always seems to say ‘Look at me.’ 他真嘚瑟。总喜欢说“看着我”。（这种说话语气听起来让人觉得居高临下）
最常见的形式是：Get a big head
意思是：To become arrogant or conceited; to assume an exaggeratedly high opinion of oneself. 自我膨胀了，不知道自己姓什么叫什么了，嘚瑟起来了。
例句：
Samantha got a big head after her book became a bestseller. 自从她的书大卖之后，Samantha尾巴就翘上天了。
其实也好理解，get a big head是不是有点像汉语说的自我膨胀呢？得意了就轻飘飘的自以为是起来了。
Get a big head就是形容一个人变得arrogant了，他的ego inflated了，跟别人说话时变得condecending（居高临下）了，经常会lord it over别人（颐指气使）。
这样理解就对了。
