第708期：细节决定成败最地道的英语说法

很多人喜欢说“细节决定成败”这句话，很有道理。

但这句话用英语怎么表达呢？

一般的翻译无非是 details are important; Small details make big differences; 或 Details decide success or failure.

都不太好。

今天我们来学一个最地道的说法，英语中原本就有一个成语表达了同样的意思：God is in the detail.

这句成语源自一句德国谚语（Der liebe Gott steckt im detail）。英语就是直接把这句德语翻译成了英语。据说也是一个德国人首先在英语媒体上使用这句话后来才被英语吸收进来的。

用英语解释就是：attention paid to small things has big rewards, or that details are important.

其实用大陆流行的句式翻译成”细节是王道“最贴切，但意思跟”细节决定成败“一样。

看个例句：

Remember that God is in the detail, so make sure everything is in order before you begin. 记住，细节是王道。在开始之前一定要确保一切准备都就绪了。

从God is in the detail这句成语又衍生出了另一个更常用的成语：The devil is in the detail. (*detail 或 details 都对）

这个成语有两层不太一样的意思：

（1）mistakes are usually made in the small details of a project. Usually it is a caution to pay attention to avoid failure.

不注意小细节往往会酿成大错误。

（2）“细节中的魔鬼”指的是某些东西乍一看可能看起来很简单，但完成起来比预期的要花费更多的时间和精力。因为细节中隐藏了很多事先看不到的困难或问题——the details of a plan, agreement etc are very important and may result in problems.
