第709期：什么样的人才能被称为“大地之盐”？

今天的内容有点杂，我们来聊几个跟盐有关的话题。

先说说你的薪水吧。

你知道 salary 这个词怎么来的吗？这个词的英语和汉语都很有意思。

Salary 来自于拉丁语 salt.

薪水怎么会跟盐扯上关系呢？

先看看汉语“薪水”这个词。

薪是柴火。有柴火和水才能取暖做饭，这两样东西是人生存的最基本保证。

那么盐呢？

今天大家可能都感觉不到盐的重要性了，但在中外历史上，盐和铁这两样东西一直都是最重要的战略物资。

中国最早从春秋时期的齐国就开始了政府对盐铁的专营，这个主意是管仲提出的。

又是管仲！就是发明了妓院的那个齐国宰相。中国的娼妓业奉管仲为祖师爷。这个人厉害的。

近代的红顶商人胡雪岩也是靠盐发家的。

• Worth one’s salt

在古代的西方，盐也是非常特殊的物品。

古罗马曾一度给士兵发放盐作为薪金和奖励的一部分。

所以在英语中有一个说法叫 A man worth his salt. 意思就是 an efficient or capable man. 形容一个人“值得他的盐”意思就是说这个人很能干，能力对得起他应得的那份盐。

• Above the salt

由于盐如此重要，在中世纪的欧洲，贵族人家吃饭时都会盐放在主人的面前，地位低的人离盐罐子就远一些。

这样，主人或地位最高的那个人的座位就好像 sit above the salt一样。

Above the salt形容一个人的地位高。

例句：

Mike considers himself above the salt since getting that big promotion at the law firm last month.

自从上个月在律所大幅加薪后，Mike就觉得自己身居高位了（高人一等了）。

• Salt of the earth
  

理解了这一点，才好理解下面要讲的今天的主要内容：Salt of the earth.

Salt of the earth是一句英语成语，源自《圣经》新约马太福音第五章第13节（Matthew 5:13）。

圣经原话是这样的：

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost
his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing,
but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

这是耶稣对门徒说的一段话。

英语成语 salt of the earth 就是从这段话来的，意思是 very good and honest people.

如果一个人被叫做 salt of the earth，这可是不得了的一个赞誉。

被称为the salt of the earth的人是(1) 优秀人才，中坚力量。(2)不仅地位高，而且品德高尚。(*两层意思）

Being described by someone as ‘the salt of the earth’ is quite a
compliment…it means that you are a person of great worth and
reliability.

耶稣在圣经里的那段话表明，salt of the earth强调的主要是品德，而不是世俗的能力。

所以剑桥大辞典这样解释 salt of the earth:

If you say that someone is the salt of the earth, you mean that they are a very good and honest person.

再看两个例句：

Mrs. Jones is the salt of the earth. She is the first to help anyone in trouble. 

Frank’s mother is the salt of the earth. She has five children of her own and yet fosters three others.

这两个例句中的 the salt of the earth 明显说的不是能力和本领。你觉得该怎么翻译呢？

佛老心中的salt of the earth是那些正直、善良、可靠、值得信赖、绽放着人性光辉的好人，例如Mother Teresa.

但我不会把那些很有本事的成功人士称为salt of the earth. 他们是very capable and successful persons.

马太福音里面那段话的本意是希望那些门徒们 Do what Jesus does. 只有那样，才是the salt of the earth; the light of the world.
