第722期：英语怎样说你的“另一半”？

很多年前有过一个笑话，说一个中国人第一次去日本。有一次在填一个表格时，在老婆的“关系”一栏中写了“爱人”。

哈，日本人吓了一跳，寻思中国人怎么这么开放啊，情人都这么正大光明说出来啊。

原来，“爱人”（あいじん）这两个汉字在日语中的意思不是老婆，而是情人、有暧昧关系的异性。

那么在英语中怎么表达“我的爱人”或“另一半”呢？

有很多种说法，大家想必都知道很多。例如：my better half, my wife/husband, my hubby, my spouse, my man, my lady, my old man等等等等。

今天我们来学一个大家平时不太常说的说法：significant other，我想可以翻译成汉语的“我那位”。

现在西方很多年轻人不愿意过多透露自己的私生活，更不想说太多关于自己伴侣的事。所以 significant other这个中性的说法就在美国首先流行起来了。

Significant other is colloquially used as a gender-neutral term for a person’s partner in an intimate relationship without disclosing or presuming anything about marital status, relationship status, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

你看这个词多省心，既不透露性别，也不涉及婚姻状态，又不暴露性取向，男女都可以称 significant other.

看到一个搞怪的对话例句：

Why’s Roger always talking about his significant other? Why don’t he just say girlfriend?

Roger为什么总说significant other啊？干嘛不说女朋友呢？

Because his “girlfriend” is a guy named Bruce.

因为他的“女朋友”是个男的，叫Bruce.

时代不同了，人们的私生活比以前复杂了。significant other 适应了新时代，我觉得这个词挺好。

尤其在不流行结婚的北欧国家，很多人一辈子只有partner，没有wife/husband，对他们来说，一个关系稳定的partner就是significant other了。

即便不是同性恋，有时候年轻人不愿意跟别人说自己的感情状态，例如是否已结婚，或者还只是在恋爱中，又不想说是男女朋友的关系，那么就可以称另一方为 significant other.

在心理学中，significant other(s)的意思就不一样了，一般指对你的人生产生过巨大影响的人，不一定是亲密关系中的人。

In psychology, a significant other is any person who has great importance to an individual’s life or well-being.

这时候，我觉得有点类似汉语所说的“贵人”。但不完全是贵人啦，因为对我们的人生造成重大影响的除了贵人，还有小人或者前世有仇的陌生人吧。
