第781期：没事别惹事，一个不能翻译的小词趣

俗话说没事别惹事。我记得中学英语老师第一次教我们 Don’t trouble trouble until trouble troubles you时，我们都觉得英语好好玩。

今天我们就来聊聊跟这个意思有关的几种英语说法。

英语中表示惹麻烦或自找麻烦这个意思的成语和俗语有很多，像什么 Don’t poke the tiger; Don’t play with fire; Don’t bate the wolf. 等等等等。

今天我们重点来讲一个美国英语中常用的说法：You mess with the bull, (and) you get the horns.

这句话的字面很形象，你去惹公牛，它就会用角顶你。意思就是 If you anger someone, you will be faced with retaliation.

关于这句话的出处，一直有争议。有人说是来自西班牙的斗牛传统，也有人说是来自美国南方乡下。

不管是从哪来的，这都是一句很地道很形象的美国英语。

佛老最喜欢的美剧之一《生活大爆炸》(Big Bang)中Sheldon Cooper就说过这句话，而且还玩了一个很巧妙的词趣。

在第8季第14集中，Sheldon 说：You mess with the bull, you get the horns. I’m about to show this guy just how horny I can be.

这句话当时把我笑翻了。Sheldon这句话的妙处不是说了今天我们讲的这句成语，而是第二句中的horny跟前面的horns连起来玩的文字游戏。

*Horny是淫荡的意思。

所以，Sheldon说的是：你要是惹事儿，就等着倒霉吧。我马上叫这个家伙知道知道我可以多淫荡。

但这个意思没法翻译，不是因为“淫荡”这个词没法翻译，而是前面的horns和后面的horny之间的这个联系和语气的不相干没法翻译。

英语中有很多跟动物有关的成语，跟公牛有关的就很多。不一一列举了，我临时想到另一个：take the bull by the horns 抓住牛角制服公牛，意思是遇到困难时，勇敢面对，强力解决问题 —— deal decisively with a difficult or dangerous situation.

一句美国英语中的成语，口语中可以说， (If) You mess with the bull, (and) you get the horns. 意思是：If you provoke somebody, you can expect an aggressive reaction.
