今天我们要讲的内容是一句话引发的很多句话：Whatever floats your boat.
字面意思是……还真不好翻译……任何能浮起你的船的东西……

这是最简单的解释，就是做你喜欢做的事。
这个说法跟昨天讲的suit yourself稍有不同，主要区别在于语气。
来看两个例句：

*在这个语境中，语气是生气的。这时候 whatever floats your boat就跟suit yourself一样了。If it makes you happy/it’s your decision/it’s your choice (although I don’t necessarily agree and I don’t care anyway)
有没有一点好奇——为什么英语说float your boat呢？喜欢做什么事跟船有什么关系？
这句成语的来源不好考证，没有权威的定论。一个我比较接受的说法是 float one’s boat这句话最早来自1963年John F. Kennedy一次演讲中的一句话：A rising tide lifts all boats. 大致意思类似汉语的“水涨船高”。肯尼迪总统说这句话时的意思是鼓励美国人民勒紧裤腰带努力工作共克时坚，因为只有水涨起来了，大家的小船才能浮起来。
Float your boat据说就是从这里来的，但直到1981年才有芝加哥的一家报纸首次使用了 whatever floats your boat这个说法。

据说上面这句话就是最早出现whatever floats your boat这个说法的那篇报纸文章上的。
Float one’s boat的意思就是To make someone happy. Often used in the phrase “whatever floats (one’s) boat.”
就是说，float one’s boat很少单独使用，基本都用在 whatever floats one’s boat这句成语里。
下面是个float one’s boat单独使用的例句：
I can see the band’s appeal. But it doesn’t float my boat. 这个乐队不错，但不是我的菜。（It’s good, but I don’t find it exciting. I am not attracted.)
