第1668期：裁员花样知多少？裁员就说裁员，别瞎起外号了。

要说现在什么事最火？裁员肯定算一个。有些公司裁员又不承认是裁员，英文不敢说layoff，而说restructuring（结构重组）。殊不知 layoff 本来就是裁员的委婉说法了，只是说的人多了，现在大多数人已经把 layoff 当成了裁员的正式说法，原本委婉的意思一点都没有了。

Layoff就是termination of employment，就是解雇、开除，再换什么好听的词也不是什么好事。

The term “layoff” originally meant a temporary interruption in work (and usually pay). 这个词最早就是termination 的委婉语说法，本意是暂停，停止活动。我估计是取了 lay off 这个词组最基础的意思——休息、停下工作。

很多企业裁员都不愿意承认，头可断血可流，贞节牌坊走哪儿都背身上。现在裁员的别称花样可多了，试举几例如下，看看你见过几种说法：

downsizing

excess reduction

rightsizing

leveraging synergies

delayering

smartsizing

redeployment

workforce reduction

workforce optimization

simplification

force shaping

recussion

manage out people

resource action

reduction in force

redundancy

以上这些词，都可以算裁员的委婉语（euphemism）。你最常听到哪几个词？我听到最多的有三个：layoff, downsize, redundancy.

但再委婉的用词也改变不了裁员背后的无情。无情的不仅是雇主，更无情的是大环境和冰冷的现实。

除了裁员，还有很多企业freeze headcount（冻结招聘计划），走一个人就不再招替补了，这种做法在英文中又称为attrition（自然消耗），positions will be eliminated as workers quit or retire.

还有一些公司对老员工一次性买断工龄，令其提前退休，这叫early retirement buyout.

经济寒冬一旦到来，谁也挡不住。人在江湖，自求多福吧，在滔滔洪水中，人人都是泥人儿，搭不上诺亚方舟。
