第2025期：When is the “deadline”?

在外企分配工作任务时，大家都会问 When is the deadline？问的是这项工作要求的完成时间，“什么时候要？或什么时候交？” 很多人把 deadline直译成“死线”，也很形象。

你有没有觉得奇怪 dead + line为什么就是一件事到期的最后期限（time limit）？跟 death有什么关系？

其实deadline这个词最早还真的跟“死”有关系，碰到真的会死。

这个词源自美国南北战争时期南方军的战俘监狱（Confederate PoW Camp），位于佐治亚州（Geogia）的Camp Sumter and Andersonville Prison，现在是个历史纪念馆。

南北战争时期，这座监狱囚禁过四万多名北方军俘虏，由于条件恶劣，一万三千多名战俘死在了这座监狱里。

不断有战俘冒死越狱逃跑，于是监狱守军军官Henry Wirz下令在监狱围墙里面距离外墙20英尺的地方用木板围着监狱摆了一个圈，告诉士兵只要看到有人碰到这个圈，就立即开枪格杀勿论 –  fire upon and kill any of the prisoners” who might touch, fall upon or pass over the “do-not-cross”line. 可以想象电视剧西游记里孙悟空给唐僧在地上画的那个无形的圈，白骨精一碰就被电到。

Deadline这个词就是这样来的。

又过了几十年，直到1920年代，deadline 这个词才开始在美国媒体上正式使用，当时的意思只是 作家或记者的截稿日期（the time by which a writer must complete a story for publication）。

现在 deadline已经变成各种语境中的常用词了，表示截止期限，the point in time at which something must be completed.

赶在截止时间之前完成叫 meet the deadline, 没完成叫 miss the deadline，做什么事都觉得在赶工期交作业叫 under deadlines，该死的 lines.
