第2094期：哪些国家名和城市名字前要加 the?

一个很微妙的语言小问题，小到甚至不配叫做问题，只能算个英文话佐料——有没有发现有些国家名字前面要定冠词the，而大多数国家名字前不用加？

最常见的几个例子：

The United States

The United Arab Emirates（UAE 阿联酋）

The United Kingdom

The Netherlands

The Philippines

不太常见的例子有：

The Maldives（马尔代夫）

The Bahamas（巴哈马群岛）

The Solomon Islands 所罗门群岛

The Marshall Islands 马绍尔群岛

The Gambia 冈比亚

The Congo (the Democratic Republic of the Congo) 刚果

有一些城市名字前面要加the：

最著名的一个城市是海牙，英文叫 the Hague，不能直接说 Hague.

为什么？

因为Hague原来只是一个普通名词，不是地名，在荷兰语中的意思是hedge

“Den” is an old-fashioned form of “de” and “Den Haag” is actually short for ‘s-Gravenhage, which means “The Count’s Hedge” (= a private, enclosed hunting ground).

其实这个语言现象很普遍，再如下面这几个例子：

Los Angeles

Las Vegas

这两个美国城市名都是西班牙语词，los是阳性定冠词复数，las是阴性定冠词复数，后来冠词都成了城市名字的一部分，没人注意到了。

葡萄牙城市波尔图的名字叫 O Porto，意思就是 the port. 因为它最早就是个港口（O 就是葡语中的阳性定冠词相当于the）。
