第762期：木耳为什么叫“犹太人的耳朵”？
今天星期天，我们照例来讲一个轻松的话题。木耳的英文怎么说？
以黑木耳为例，有好几个英文名字：black fungus, wood ear, jelly ear, tree ear.
最惊人的一个名字是：Jew’s ear 犹太人的耳朵。
木耳为什么叫犹太人的耳朵呢？
木耳这种东西的学名叫Auricularia auricula-judae，这个词谁也记不住。所以正常人没有这样说的。
1880年，真菌学家（mycologist）正式称这种东西为“Judas’s ear.” 但后来被人们叫白了，叫成了 Jew’s ear.
不过也不算大错，因为犹大（Judas)本来就是犹太人(Jew）嘛。
那么木耳跟犹大又有什么关系呢？
这里面又有一个圣经记载的故事。
大家都知道犹大出卖了耶稣，导致耶稣被钉死在十字架上。犹大因此得到的赏赐是30枚银币。
据新约圣经马太福音27章1-10节的记载，犹大最后在一棵树上上吊自杀了。
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was
condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty
pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent
blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and
departed, and went and hanged himself.

由于圣经在整个西方社会文化中的地位和影响，因为犹大吊死在一棵树上，而木耳都是生长在树，尤其老树的树干上的，所以英语把这种东西叫做Judas’ ear了吧，又因为Judas是犹太人，人们又把Judas’ ear叫成了 Jew’s ear.
从生物分类角度而言，木耳和蘑菇都属于“真菌”，英语中又叫 fungus。我最不喜欢这个词，因为fungus也是脚气的意思。
中国是木耳的主要产地，最早的记载早在战国时期的《礼记》书中就有了。因为长得像耳朵，又主要生长在落叶乔木和灌木树干上，所以中文就把这种东西叫做木耳。
