第267期：high street and downtown

如果你也像佛老一样每天听BBC广播，一定经常听到high street这个词。这个词是个典型的英国英语词汇，今天我们就来聊聊跟high street有关的词。

High street的意思是： a street where the most important shops and businesses in a town are.

其实就相当于汉语里的“商业中心”或“市中心”。指一个城镇商店最集中的区域。也叫high road.

在美国英语中一般不会说high street，与之意思相似的词是main street.

Tripsavvy.com上有个美国游客记录了自己第一次到英国听到high street时的迷惑，说：People in the UK use the term the high street the way Americans use the phrase Main Street.
A high street is the main commercial and retail street in a town. In
big cities, each neighborhood or district will probably have its own
high street. In a small village, the high street may have little more
than a mailbox, a public pay phone, and a small convenience store. At

顺便说一句，英国英语中如果说某件衣服是high street clothe，你猜猜是什么意思？

答案：英国人如果在high street后面加一个名词（如clothe等），意思不是这件衣服是在市中心买的，而是这件衣服很普通，是普通商店里的货色，不是定做的或设计师专门设计的，类似汉语里的“大路货”。

Downtown是个典型的美国英语词汇，据说源自纽约。因为纽约这个城市最早是围绕港口发展起来的，曼哈顿岛的南端是美国先民最早定居的地方，相对于整个纽约市的地形而言，曼哈顿地区处在低位，就叫downtown，后来这个区域发展起来了，就以downtown表示市中心，相对位于高位的地区就叫uptown了。Downtown是商业集中区，uptown是住宅区。这本来只是纽约的生活形态和城市结构，后来成为了美国英语中固定的说法。
