第1957期：我家最近的烘焙

最近几个周末我家厨房经常诞生一批喧腾腾的胖西点——老婆学烘焙，自制吐司、热狗、蛋糕个个有模有样，用料好，比外面买的好吃多了。不过，减肥也从此无望了。

烘焙的英文叫 baking，烘焙的产品以面包为主，所以面包房面包店英文叫 bakery.

前天我吃完两个刚出炉的热狗三块开心果蛋糕后，想起一句好玩的英文成语：best thing since sliced bread（切片面包以来最好的东西）。

面包刚从烤箱拿出来是一大块长方体，英文叫 loaf， 有句英文谚语 Half a loaf is better than no bread. 半个面包也比没有面包好（有就比没有好；聊胜于无）。

把loaf切成片，就叫 sliced bread，把切成片的面包加热烤至焦黄酥脆就叫 toast（吐司），to toast is to make the bread slice brown and crisp by heating.

切面包专用刀英文叫 bread knife 或bread slicing knife，带锯齿的。

面包已经有三千多年历史了，但直到1928年才有了自动切面包机，发明人叫Otto Rohwedder，美国人，在此之前都是手工切的。

很快，一家美国公司（Chillicothe Baking Company）就开始批量销售切片面包了，当时的广告词是：The greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped. （面包被包装起来之后烘焙界最大的一个进步）。

这个发明的确很了不起，这句广告词家喻户晓成为经典，后来很多广告都喜欢模仿这句广告词形容某件新发明是“史上最……”，于是美国英语中就有了这句好玩的成语：The best/greatest thing since sliced bread（切片面包发明以来最伟大/最棒的东西），用来形容一件了不起的新事物新发明，Something amazing, outstanding or praiseworthy, especially a relatively recent invention likely to improve people’s lives.
