第1027期：听说下雨天要读英文诗 – 人生就美在还有诗和远方

美国文学史上有三位诗人被称为“炉边诗人”：

• William Cullen Bryant 威廉·卡伦·布莱恩特（1794-1878）
• Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 亨利·沃兹沃斯·朗费罗(1807-1882)
• James Russell Lowell 詹姆斯•拉塞尔•洛威尔（1819-1891）

为什么叫炉边诗人（the fireside poets)?

因为他们的诗都喜欢使用炉灶（hearth）这个意象来描写温暖的家庭生活场景。有文艺理论认为炉边诗人代表了美国诗歌第一次达到可以媲美英国诗歌的文学高峰。

今天，希望你放松心情和眼睛，慢慢欣赏一首 Longfellow 的小诗 The Rainy Day.

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

这首诗在 Longfellow 的作品中不太出名，但很美，很宁静。

大学时一位美国老师教我们这首诗，老先生悠扬地朗诵，全班鸦雀无声都听呆了。老师读完最后一句，我们抬头才发现老先生早已老泪纵横。

这个镜头我一直记得，由此也喜欢上了这位诗人和这首诗。

这首诗给英语留下了一句谚语，或者成语：Into each life some rain must fall.

这句话不难理解，每个人的一生中总会下雨，每个人的生命里都会有雨天，谁的一生中没有风雨（一帆风顺）？

说到了 rain，想起一个很小但很好用的英语习惯用语。

所谓“很好用”，我指的是口语和写作中都可以用，不仅地道，而且传神，能给你的口语和书面英语增色。

这个习惯用语大概很多人都学过：rain or shine

字面是“下雨或出太阳”，意思是——不论什么天气都……

看个例句：

He plays golf, come rain or shine, every Monday. 不论什么天气，他每个礼拜一都去打高尔夫。（他每周一都打高尔夫，风雨无阻。）

除了表示字面的天气状况，这句话也可以表示 no matter what happens 的口气。

再看个例句：

I’ll always love you, come rain or (come) shine.
