第115期：Mayday

Youtube上有段录像，经常被各大公司培训和开会时拿来播放，意在提醒大家”improve your English”或者引出“cross cultural communication”很难的话题。

这段经典的录像讲的是一个第一天上班的德国海岸警卫队队员，在应急广播系统中听到有船只呼叫求救。场景台词如下：

七年前我第一次看这段录像时，大笑。今年再次在德国看了这段录像，仍然大笑。德国人是真的可笑。

上面场景中德国人分不清sink和think的读音，于是闹了这个笑话。

今天我们主要来学习一下开头的那个”Mayday, Mayday”.

Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications.

Mayday类似于莫尔斯电码中的SOS，是在紧急求救电话中的简称。

It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by
aviators and mariners. 主要使用者是濒临生命危险的飞行员和（海运）领航员。

The call is always given three times in a row (“Mayday Mayday Mayday“)
to prevent its being mistaken for some similar-sounding phrase under
noisy conditions, and to distinguish an actual Mayday call from a
message about a Mayday call.

为防止环境噪音掩盖求救电话，通常说三遍Mayday，也有说两遍的。不过这倒应了中国的那句网络流行语，重要的事说三遍。

那么为什么选用了Mayday这个词呢？（May和day连在一起。分开May Day就是五月节了。）

The Mayday procedure word was originated in 1923, by Frederick Stanley Mockford（弗莱德利克史丹利默克福德），a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London.
Mockford was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and
would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an
emergency.

原来，这个词是伦敦机场的无线电指挥人员发明的。因为世界各地飞行员的口音不同，机场指挥中心需要一个在紧急情况下最容易被听懂，不会被误解的单词来表示紧急求救。

Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word “Mayday” from the French “m’aider”, a shortened version of “venez m’aider” (meaning “come and help me”).

由于他所在的机场主要航班是往返于巴黎和伦敦之间的，于是他就选了一个法语词m’aider来表示紧急求救。m’aider的意思就是“快来救我”。

有人肯定想了，为什么不直接说”help”呢，多简单。但是你想过没有，拉丁语系的飞行员说”help”时大多听起来像”elp“，甚至elp中间的l发音也不同于英语中的l，因此，为了避免各种麻烦和误解，Mayday就成了今天国际通用的无线电求救语。
