第202期：misgiving

每种语言中表示情绪和心情的词往往最微妙。今天我们来学一个这样的词misgiving.

简单地说，misgiving就是a feeling of doubt.

但这种情绪不仅仅是doubt（疑问），还有疑虑、担忧、害怕等因素在里面。

例句：

When she learned her daughter’s boyfriend had just been released from prison, her misgiving about him became stronger.

得知女儿的男友刚从牢里出来，她对他的忧虑愈发重了。

上句中misgiving表达的那种感觉就不仅仅是doubt（怀疑），更有害怕的成分。

柯林斯词典的解释是：

If you have misgivings about something that is being suggested or done, you feel that it is not quite right, and are worried that it may have unwanted results.

这个解释较深入。

再例如美国的新闻里每天（每时每刻）都有表达对川普不按常理出牌的行为表达担忧的文章和报道，misgivings about Trump，表达的也是那种对川大爷不知下一步会干什么而产生对某种担忧、不放心。

韦伯斯特大词典的解释是：a feeling of doubt or suspicion especially concerning a future event.

所以你看，要真正掌握一个英语词汇，尤其是形容词，最好能比较几个词典的释义，然后找几个例句试着理解如何使用。这样学会的词才真正属于你。四部最权威的英语词典是：OED（牛津词典）、Merriam-Webster（韦伯斯特）、Collins（柯林斯词典）、Longman（朗文）。

还有一本英语字典很牛，Chambers Dictionary of Etymology（钱伯斯词源字典），这是佛老读研时最爱的字典，花了三个月通读了一遍，笔记抄了十五本。

钱伯斯是这样深入解释misgiving的词源的：

The verb “give” once meant to suggest, so to give something was to suggest it, according to the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology. The addition of the prefix “mis-” (badly, wrongly) made the suggestion dubious.

意思是，你不要看字面是mis加give构成的，就觉得是“错给”的意思。在中古英语中原本give的意思是suggest.

据牛津字典记载，misgive这个动词最早出现于16世纪初。首先使用这个词的人是Thomas More（托马斯-摩尔）。

misgive是misgiving的动词。意思一样，是“使某人的情绪精神产生疑虑、担忧或害怕）

来个简单的例句：

My heart misgives me. 我心里感到不安。

你看这句英语多简单。佛老再翻译得文艺一点——“我心中颇不宁静”……

其实，表示心里不安，又说不清楚哪里不安，或者感到良知谴责的那种小心思，有一个词：qualms. 鉴于篇幅，今天就不讲了。

最后，牛津字典说了，misgiving一般应该用复数形式misgivings.

The OED defines “misgiving” as a “feeling of mistrust, apprehension, or loss of confidence,” and notes that the noun is frequently used in the plural.
