第203期：about-face
今天我们来学一个看起来无比简单的词。但请注意，about-face却不是about face的。（包袱响了吗？你get这个小梗了没？）
今天我们要谈的about-face，注意，是有连字符的，是一个词。没有连字符的话就没有意义了。
这个词就两个意思：
- a reversal of direction 调转方向（反向）
- a reversal of attitude, behavior, or point of view 态度、行为和观点的反转、逆转
这个词有两种发音：[əboutˈfās]ˌ; [əˈbaʊtˈfeɪs].后一种较常用。
佛老把这个词翻译成“翻脸”、“变脸”。
注意这里的“变脸”只是引申义，跟川剧的变脸不同。
川剧的绝活变脸用英语怎么说呢？有两种说法：
Bian Lian (simplified Chinese: 变脸; traditional Chinese: 變臉; pinyin: Biàn Liǎn; literally: “Face-Changing”) is an ancient Chinese dramatic art that is part of the more general Sichuan opera.
这是wikipedia直接采纳了汉语拼音Bian Lian的说法。但这样说必须加上一串解释外国人才能明白。不推荐。
一般来说，川剧的变脸就叫face changes in Sichuan opera或face chaning in Sichuan opera.
说到发音，插播一个小问题：沙漠 desert怎么读？
我相信99.9%的人都是读作/ˈdɛzət/的，对吗？但是这只是因为初学英语时老师就是这样教我们的，我们从来没多想。其实，这只是美国英语的读法。desert这个词至少有四种发音方式。哈佛公开课Justice里的Sandel教授因为在牛津大学读的博士，所以他尽管是美国人，很多词的发音却留下了浓重的英国味。今天我们不多讲这个。有兴趣自己研究的朋友可以参考这个链接：https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/desert
再回到about-face这个词。一般有两种用途。第一是军事口令，就是“向后~~~转”。英语中就是这么喊的。
剑桥英语大字典是这样解释的：About-face is also an order given to soldiers to tell them to turn around and face the other way.
另一个用途常见于新闻英语。我们随便看几个英美主流媒体的新闻标题。

跟about-face同义，但比它更高级的一个词是volte-face. 这个词更厉害了。
