第325期：shack up 未婚同居

今天我们要学的这个词有点少儿不宜哦：shack up — 未婚同居

其实shack up有两个意思啦，不一定都是未婚同居。

基本意思是：To live with someone or stay at someone’s house temporarily.

这个意思很普通啊，就是暂时在某人家里借宿的意思。

例句：

We’ve been shacking up at my brother’s place while our house is being renovated. 家里装修那阵子我们一直在我弟弟家借住。

但问题在于语言在不断发展，意思也在不断丰富。

现在shack up的意思大多都是指男女(呃~~或者男男）未婚同居了。

用英语解释就是：to start living in the same house as sexual partners, without being married

例句：

She is shacking up with her boyfriend.

Pinterest上有句出名的话：You can’t shack up with the devil and expect God to pay the rent.

你不能一边与魔鬼苟合在一起一边又指望上帝为你付房租。

其实shack这个词的本义可单纯了，就是一间简陋的小屋而已。

美国有很多乡下旅馆，招牌上都写着Shack up Inn. 其实就是简陋的家庭旅馆，设施简陋，供路人借宿胡乱休息一下而已。

在最近的一本英文畅销书“Crazy Rich Asians”中，女主角Rachel和她妈妈有一段对话很有趣，也用到了shack up这个词。

Rachel跟妈妈说Nick要带她去新加坡，会见到Nick的父母。妈妈鼓励她去。

“…how many nights a week do you already spend at his place? I’m shocked you two haven’t moved in together yet.”

“You’re the only Chinese mom I know who’s actually encouraging her daughter to shack up with a guy.” Rachel laughed.

“I’m the only Chinese mother with an unmarried daughter who’s almost thirty!”
