第545期：站在道德高地英文怎么说？

很多人都喜欢说某某人站在道德高地，意思是用一些高大上的论调使自己显得比别人高明，尤其在道德上处于一种优势地位。这个说法不用过多解释，相信每个人都明白。今天我们来聊聊“道德高地”用英语怎么表达。

道德高地的英文是：moral high ground，中英文字面完全对应，应该是直译过来的。十五年前我估计没人听说过这种说法，现在人人都喜欢说。

如果你想表达“站在道德高地”这个意思，可以说stand on the moral high ground，或 take the moral high ground. 意思就是：To claim, purport, or make it appear that one’s arguments, beliefs, ideas, etc., are morally superior to those espoused by others.

这里都动词除了stand on和take之外，还可以用claim, seize. 一般常见的就这四种说法。

英语新闻中除了moral high ground，还有一种说法很常见，叫 take the high road. 和 take the low road. 

这也是一个来自美国政坛的一句英语成语，意思很难准确翻译成汉语。我先解释一下，大家看应该怎么翻译。

When you ‘take the high road’ – it means doing the right thing even if its not popular or easy. 

Take the high road的意思是尽管你知道这样做很艰难，但你仍然这样做，因为这样做才是道德的，正确的。不管别人怎么误解，你义无反顾。有点像屈原说的“亦余心之所向兮，虽九死其尤未悔“或《孟子》里说的“虽千万人，吾往矣。”

Take the high road is to choose the most noble, ethical, or diplomatic course or method, especially after or in the face of negativity or ill treatment. 尤其是在你遭到别人的不公正对待时，你仍然坚持用道德的，有尊严的方法对待别人。类似汉语里的“以德报怨”。

举个例子如下：

if someone has wronged you, you
can “take the low road” and seek revenge. Or you can take the high road
— forgive them or ignore them or not let it worry you. 

如果有人冤枉了你，你有两个选择。你可以take the low road，以牙还牙，用同样的手段报复对方。你可以take the high road，宽恕对方，不跟他一般见识，用你宽广的胸襟藐视他，继续做你认为正确的事。

有人把take the high road翻译成”走高端路线“，well, 不太贴切，但very close，也不错啦。

需要注意的是，以上我们讲的只是美国英语。high road这个词在英国英语中意思完全不同。在英国英语中，high road的意思类似main road（主干道）。英国人把城市里的非主干道叫做 low road. 

所以大家如果在阅读中碰到take the high road要注意判断是美国英语还是英国英语的语境，这样才能正确理解它的含义。
