第1002期：马路上的“睡警察” – 每个人都见过的 sleeping policeman

今天要讲的这个词是一个英国英语特有的词汇，每个人都见过，但不一定注意过。但假如你开车的话，你一定见过：sleeping policeman.

Sleeping policeman 不是睡着的警察，而是指马路上专为机动车设计的减速带（见下图）：

其实这个东西的工程术语叫 speed bump，或者 road bump.

Bump 就是隆起物、一个鼓包、肿块、凸起。也可以叫 speed hump（hump 是骆驼背上的驼峰，也可以指山丘、丘陵、小土包）。

英国人为什么把这种减速带叫作 sleeping policeman 呢？这个问题我还没找到答案，但可以肯定的是这个设计理念最早是英国人提出的，据说发明人叫 Arthur Holly Compton，好像是一个大学里的物理学家。

但第一个建造马路减速带的是美国人。1906年，美国新泽西州 Chatham 这个地方的市政人员在马路中间首次做出了这种减速带，目的是迫使机动车驾驶员减速，作用是保护行人安全。

我猜英国英语也是出于这个原因才把这东西叫作 sleeping policeman 的。

其实提醒机动车减速的装置不止这种减速带，还有很多不同种类。这类设计和装置可以统称为 speed calming devices（使交通平缓下来的装置）。由于涉及很多市政工程术语和理论，本文就不多讲了。下面仅供有兴趣深入了解的读者参考：

Speed Humps: A rounded hump that normally covers the entire width of a road.
Speed Cushions: These small rectangular humps are suitable for routes used by emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines.
Speed Tables: A type of speed hump that is usually made from either bricks or recycled textured rubber materials.
Chicanes: These are artificial bends in the road which force oncoming traffic to slow down as vehicles have to maneuver around the curves.
