Library of Congress:

On December 25, Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Christ. The origins of the holiday are uncertain; by the year 336, however, the Christian church in Rome observed the Feast of the Nativity on December 25.

At that time, Christmas coincided approximately with the winter solstice and the Roman Festival of Saturnalia. (https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/december-25/)

Christmas, Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin.

The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice.

The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.”

Wikipedia (etymology 词源)

The English word Christmas is a shortened form of ‘Christ’s Mass’. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas)
