第1981期：high hand 不是“高手”

有一次公司开会，一个同事想拍老板马屁，夸老板是 high hand，一边说还一边冲老板竖起了大拇指，结果美国老板一脸困惑哭笑不得的表情。中国同事都大笑，就我没笑，好像只有我知道他这个马屁拍到了马蹄子上。

High hand的意思是“高压、强权、霸道、独裁、专横、飞扬跋扈”，arrogant, dictatorial, arbitrary, overbearing, using authority in an unreasonable way, without considering the opinions of other people.

说一个人 He runs the company with a high hand. 意思不是“他是管理公司的高手”，而是“他是一个用高压手段不顾员工死活的混蛋”。

你说这个马屁是不是拍到了马蹄子上？

由此派生出一个形容词 highhanded（也可以加连字符写成 high-handed），意思就是condescending, presumptuous, haughty, autocratic, bossy, cocky, imperious, oppressive, tyrannical, despotic…（有兴趣的话可以把这些近义词都学会）

想起两个日语词：

上手（じょうず，jou zu），意思就是擅长，good at，夸别人某方面厉害，高手。

反义词是“下手”（へた，he ta），就是不擅长，not good at.
