第2016期：介绍一位传奇畅销作家，跟Stephen King齐名

在2012年The Hollywood Reporter杂志的“Hollywood’s 25 Most Powerful Authors”（好莱坞25位最强作者榜）上，这位作家排第二名，第一名是Stephen King. 而Stephen King自己也曾把这位作家称为“the great American writer”.

他一生写了43本小说，其中30本被好莱坞拍成了电影，名气盖过了Raymond Chandler（美国侦探小说家钱德勒），被称为“the greatest of American crime writers”.

这个网站每年10月11日（这位作家的生日）都会隆重纪念他。

他的小说多以底特律为背景，人称“Dickens of Detroit”（底特律的狄更斯）。

2013年的今天（Aug 20），这位作家去世，享寿87岁。

Leonard至今仍被各大书评网站津津乐道，不仅因为他的多产，还因为他曾提出了一个“写作十原则”（Elmore Leonard’s Ten Rules of Writing），很多教英文写作的书上都会提及。

这十大原则是：

1. Never open a book with weather. 
一本书绝对不要以描写天气开头。天气只应该作为背景，不宜着墨过多。

2. Avoid prologues.
不要写序言。（仅指小说，nonfiction写序言很正常。）

3. Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue.
写人物对话时只用“说”这一个动词即可，绝不使用其他动词。（作者的一家之言，有些作家的建议与此相反。）

4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb “said”…he admonished gravely.
绝不用副词修饰动词“说”，例如“他郑重告诫”。

5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose. 
节制使用惊叹号，每10万字最多用2到3个。

6. Never use the words “suddenly” or “all hell broke loose.”
绝不使用“突然”或“突然大乱”这种词

7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
谨慎使用方言

8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
避免对人物描写细致过度

9. Don’t go into great detail describing places and things.
不要详细描写地方和事物（要通过人物对话表现）

10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

试着略写读者会跳过的部分（换位思考，你读小说时看到哪些地方会跳过？不分段的大段文字等）

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10. If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.” – Elmore Leonard

我把这十条原则总结为一条最重要的原则：如果我写的东西听起来像是写作，我就重写。（意思是好的小说家是“隐身”的，不能让读者跳进跳出不断感受到作者的存在。）
