第2062期：Amazing Grace

上周在一篇文章末尾放了陈百强的一首老歌《仁爱的心》，我说“这首歌背后有个故事，下次专门聊这首歌英文原版的故事”。

今天就讲讲这首歌的英文原版背后的故事。

这首歌的英文原版叫 Amazing Grace，作者：John Newton，创作于1779年，后来有很多艺术家演绎过，是赞美诗中的经典，据说也是美国各地教堂里最常听到的歌曲。

John Newton是一个英国牧师（evangelical cleric）和废奴主义者（slavery abolitionist），这是他留给后世的身份，但他在成为牧师和废奴主义者之前曾是运奴船的船长。

John Newton生于1725年，父亲是个船长，11岁时就随父亲出海。年轻时的Newton在运奴船上工作了几年，随船从非洲往英国运送黑奴。

1745年，20岁的Newton遭人背叛，自己被卖到西非成了一个奴隶贩子的奴隶。这段经历对他后来的人生转变影响很大。

1748年，做了三年奴隶的Newton获救逃离了非洲，在回英国的船上，突遭暴风雨，船只几乎沉没。绝望中的Newton开始试着祷告，祈求上帝救他性命。

奇迹（或巧合）发生了，风暴渐渐平息，安全了。

自己为奴的经历和这次海上风暴几乎丧命的经历让Newton陷入了沉思，他开始阅读圣经。一个月后，船只平安抵达英国，上岸的那一刻，Newton做了一个重大的人生决定——皈依天主教。

那天是1748年3月21日，从这天开始，John Newton变了一个人。

1765年，40岁的John Newton正式成了一位牧师。

1779年，Newton和诗人William Cowper一起创作了这首赞美诗 Amazing Grace，讲述的就是那天海上遇险的经历和感悟。

Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound) 

That sav’d a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found, 

Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, 

And grace my fears reliev’d;

How precious did that grace appear 

The hour I first believ’d!

Thro’ many dangers, toils, and snares, 

I have already come;

‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, 

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promis’d good to me, 

His word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be 

As long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, 

And mortal life shall cease;

I shall possess, within the veil, 

A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, 

The sun forbear to shine;

But God, who call’d me here below, 

Will be forever mine.

晚年的Newton致力于废奴运动（abolitionism），1807年6月，英国颁布了the Slave Trade Act 1807，宣布在大英帝国全面废除奴隶制。

六个月后，Newton满怀amazing grace去世。

John Newton died on 21 December 1807 in London, aged 82.
