今天我们学一个美国俚语：wag the dog. 字面意思是”摇狗“，你能猜出什么意思吗？

这个俚语还真的跟狗有关系。wag就是动词”摇“，狗摇尾巴就用这个动词。但我们今天要学的不是”狗摇尾巴“，而是”尾巴摇狗“。

先来看wag the dog的英文释义：

To wag the dog is to divert attention from something bad.

简单说，就是”转移视线“。

政客常用的一种宣传手段。为了转移公共视线，政客们会用其他爆炸性新闻事件来转移公众对政客丑闻的关注。

其实这是一个简略的说法，完整说法是the tail wagging the dog（尾巴摇狗）

1998年一部好莱坞电影Wag the dog上映，讲的就是一个美国总统在大选前突然深陷性丑闻，于是，为了转移公众视线，总统对一个国家发动了战争。

不料这个情节一语成谶，上映后不久，时任美国总统比尔-克林顿爆出与莱温斯基的丑闻。1998年，克林顿在首次向公众承认丑闻三天后，发起了对科索沃的空袭。这就是现实版的wag the dog例子。

The story intruded into real politics not long after its release. In 1998, when Bill Clinton’s scandal regarding Monica Lewinsky broke, he was accused of “wagging the dog.” Three days after admitting he had inappropriate relations with Lewinsky, he ordered missile strikes against two countries, allegedly to divert public attention from his sex scandal.
