第1982期：旅馆、好客、医院、临终关怀…… 人生这一大圈

今天闲聊几个英文小词，标题中的这几个词在英文里从根源上讲是一回事。先从 hospital 聊起吧。

Hospital

Hospital是法语词，源自拉丁语 hospes, 中世纪英语从法语中借用，有两层意思，第一个意思是 a stopping place for travelers（驿站、旅馆、行人歇脚停留的地方）; 第二个意思是  a place that cares for people too old, sick, or poor to care for themselves 照顾重病、年老、穷人的地方（类似救助站、医院的场所）。

Hospitality

英文词 hospitality 表示“好客”，例如酒店业、接待行业英文就叫 the hospitality industry，但实际上hospitality这个词最基本的意思只是主客之间的关系（the relationship between the host and the guest），主人为客人提供食宿。

源自拉丁语 hospes，意思就是 host, guest, 或 stranger (由此派生出另一个英文词 hostile 敌意）。

你看，hospital 和 hospitality 从源头上是同一个词 hospes 或 hostis.

Hospice

还有一个不太常见的词 hospice，一般跟 care搭配，hospice care 临终关怀，源自拉丁语 hospitum，是 hospes的变体，意思是 hospitality or place of rest and protection for the ill and weary 专供患病和虚弱者休息的地方。

简单说，hospital, hospitality, hospice 这三个词源头是一样的，都源自拉丁语 hospes.

Hospice care（临终关怀）是一个医学理念，不同于传统医学上的传统治疗，Wikipedia上的注释特别好，摘录如下：

Hospice care is a type of health care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient’s pain and symptoms and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs at the end of life. Hospice care prioritizes comfort and quality of life by reducing pain and suffering. Hospice care provides an alternative to therapies focused on life-prolonging measures that may be arduous, likely to cause more symptoms, or are not aligned with a person’s goals.

临终关怀是一种医疗保健，专注于缓解绝症患者的疼痛和症状，并在生命结束时满足他们的情感和精神需求。临终关怀通过减少疼痛和痛苦来优先考虑舒适和生活质量。临终关怀为专注于延长生命措施的疗法提供了替代方案，这些措施可能很艰巨，可能会引起更多症状，或与一个人的目标不一致。(Apple Translation）

跟浑身插管强行延长生命的理念不同，hospice care致力于减轻末期病患最后一程的身心舒适和尊严。

1967年, 在一位伟大的英国护士Cicely Saunders多年呼吁和推动下，世界第一家专业临终关怀医院 St Christopher’s Hospice 在英国建立，翻开了现代临终关怀运动的第一页，了不起的创举。
