Retire 这个词有意思，初中就学过，觉得太遥远。后来越来越近了，觉得是看花了眼。揉揉眼定睛一看，嗨，确实很遥远。
今天跟你聊聊retire 这个词怎么来的。
Retire, the word
源自中世纪法语，前缀 re 意思是 back，词根 tire 意思是 retreat, withdraw 撤退，原本是军事用语，意思是撤退到安全地带，to withdraw to a place of safety or seclusion. 这个词16世纪时进入英语。

据在线辞源字典（www.etymonline.com），retire 这个词在1660年代时引申出了“leave one’s business or occupation”这层意思，这就是今天我们对retire这个词的第一联想——退休。Retire的另一层引申义还有 go to bed，跟withdraw 一样。
例如：
She retired early last night. （She went to bed early last night.）
这句话不是说她昨天晚上退休了——哪有那好事儿啊，且退不了呢。
又例如：
After a long day of work, she retired to bed early.
这句里的retire to bed也是上床睡觉的意思，不是退休到床上去了——哪有那么简单啊，那首歌怎么唱的来着，“不经历风雨怎么见彩虹，没有人能够随随便便退休”嘛。

退休制度出现于18世纪，在那之前，人们的平均寿命普遍超不过40岁，还到不了干不动活儿的程度就已经没了，用不着考虑退休问题。
19世纪时，德国率先实行统一退休制度，法定年龄是70岁。提出这个政策的人叫 Otto von Bismarck（奥托·冯·俾斯麦），对，就是人称“铁血宰相”的那个俾斯麦。他提出德国人70退休的那年自己是74岁。
俾斯麦死去27年后，1916年，德国才把退休年龄改成了65岁。
俾斯麦死早了，少领豪些年退休金。
