有没有注意到生活中有些人特别会拍马屁？常讲一些恭维、献媚的话，令听者作呕。今天，我们来学一个这样的词：fulsome. （注意拼写）

OED（牛津词典）的解释是：

Complimentary or flattering to an excessive degree.过分的赞扬或恭维。

最常见的词组是fulsome praise，对应汉语的“献媚”再贴切不过了。fulsome在表示这个意思时是绝对的贬义，有令人作呕的意思。常常是说话人不觉得，听者已经被恶心得头晕目眩想吐了。

Two of the traditional senses of fulsome are (1) offensively, excessively flattering, and (2)excessive in a distasteful way.

来看两个例句

She was too fulsome in her praise. 她赞扬的话太虚假。

They tried to please him with fulsome compliments and extravagant gifts.

他们想用献媚的赞歌和奢侈的礼物来取悦他。但是，fulsome也有正面的意思，要视上下文而定。关于这一点，韦伯斯特大辞典这样说：Fulsome is a troublesome word. And, it turns out, it’s a rare case in which dictionaries have made the word’s meaning more confusing rather than more clear.

连韦伯斯特大辞典都认为fulsome这个词很难解释清楚。

这个词最早出现于13世纪，最初是没有贬义的，只表示“很多”的意思，可以等同于abandant或copious. 在现代英语中，贬义逐渐成了主要的涵义。

关于fulsome褒义或中性涵义的例句，我们来看一段华尔街日报(the Wall Street Journal)2017年5月12日的新闻。

On Tuesday evening, after news broke that President Donald Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey, Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) released this statement: “It is essential that ongoing investigations are fulsome and free of political interference until their completion.”

周二晚，新闻爆出川普总统解雇了FBI局长James Comey之后，Bob Corker议员表示：“现在关键的是目前正在进行的调查必须全面细致，并不受政治干扰，直到调查结束。”（此处指的是当时针对俄罗斯干预2016美国总统大选的调查）。

严格地说，这名美国议员对fulsome在上句中的使用是错误的。他犯了2009年奥巴马总统同样的错误。
