第201期：spendthrift

今天我们要聊的这个词挺有意思，是由spend和thrift两个词组成的。大家猜一下什么意思？跟spend有关。
Spendthrift是个名词，wikipedia的解释是：
A spendthrift (also profligate or prodigal) is someone who spends money prodigiously and who is extravagant and recklessly wasteful, often to a point where the spending climbs well beyond his or her means.
指的是一种人，他们花钱无度，挥金如土，经常超出他们的经济限度。
有趣的地方就在这里了。
thrift是节俭的意思，thrifty是其形容词，意思是：节俭开支。thrifty最常见的近义词是economical和frugal.都是形容人节约、节俭的意思。

economical强调的是节省，避免浪费。没有贬义。

thrifty强调的是注重节制开支，把日常省下来的钱存起来以备未来不时之需。

thrifty的英语释义是：(1) careful and diligent in the use of resources; (2) mindful of the future in spending money. 这样应该很清楚了。

来看个例句：

She is a thrifty woman and managed to put aside some money every month.

她是个会持家的女人，每月都设法省下点钱存起来。

因此thrifty是表示节俭的词里面立意较高的一个。但thrift前面加上spend就变成相反的意思了。

值得注意的是，spendthrift在现代英语中一般用于新闻报道，不指具体的人，而一般用来形容挥霍无度，不把纳税人的钱当钱的政府。例如a spendthrift government. 用现在网络词汇说，类似“大撒币”的意思。

Wikipedia说：The term is often used by the press as an adjective applied to governments who are thought to be wasting public money.

最后，从spendthrift引申一下。有一种信托叫spendthrift trust（反挥霍信托），大意就是有钱人生前把资产委托给一家信托机构，约定让信托机构给受益人（有钱人的子女）支付合理的收益，但不允许受益人（子女）用资产偿还账务等。这种信托方式在英美富人中非常流行。
