韦伯斯特的定义是：natural wit or intelligence 天然的、天生的智慧或智商。其实就是“常识”。也可以叫native wit, common sense, horse sense, good sense etc. 今天咱们就集中谈谈这几个表示“常识”的同义词。

看似简单的这个词可是历史很悠久的。最早出现于中世纪英语。（1400–50; late Middle English moderis wytte.）

If you have gumption, you have guts. People with gumption are determined and full of courage — and common sense, too.

柯林斯字典的解释是：

If someone has gumption, they are able to think what it would be sensible to do in a particular situation, and they do it. 如果一个人有gumption，他能在一个特定情景下理性地思考，并付诸行动。

If someone has the gumption to do something, they are brave enough to do it.

如果一个人对某件事有gumption，他就有足够的勇气去做。
