第227期：John Doe

经常看美剧的朋友对今天我们要学的这个词应该不陌生，因为很多美剧（尤其是罪案剧）中都经常出现John Doe这个词。昨天佛老在看美剧《实习医生格蕾》第一季第三集时就又听到了这个词。来吧，我们一起来聊聊这个词。

John Doe就是身份不明的无名氏(unidentified people)，类似汉语中的“某某”。通常用在美国和加拿大的法庭、医院或警局这些场合。例如“无名女尸”……

例如昨天佛老看的那部美剧中的情节是主治医生对实习医生说，那个病人不是一个John Doe，而是一个父亲，一个丈夫。意思是病人是一个活生生的人，不是身份不明的尸体，需要尊重。

John Doe这个词最早源自英国，原来只是一个法律术语，是法庭为了方便说明一个法律关系时虚构的一个人物名称。但后来这个词反而在英国不常用，在美国很常用了。

一般来说，John Doe指的是不明身份的男性。来看下面的小结：

John Doe, John Roe或Richard Roe (for men) 指男性

Jane Doe或Jane Roe(for women) 指女性

Baby Doe,Janie Doe,或Johnny Doe(for children) 指儿童

有时候，出于对当事人身份保密的考虑，也会用这个词来指代某人。

来看两个实际的例句：

The police were unable to identify the victim, so they simply referred to him as ‘John Doe’.警方无法确认受害者身份，就称之为“John Doe”.

The alarm went out for a John Doe who stole the diamonds from the store. 警察发出命令，搜捕一个从商店里偷盗钻石的人。

除了上面说的法律意义上的“身份不明的某某人”之外，John Doe也可以指普通人。这时候，也可以说是another Joe, 或another face in the world. 有点路人甲的意思。
