这个成语最早出现于罗马天主教会。过去，罗马天主教会在授予某个人圣徒称号之前，要经过慎重的审查和审议。审议小组里专门设置了一个教会官员，他的任务是指出这个提名人的缺点，目的是促使审议小组更慎重地全面评估这个圣徒候选人。
这个任务十分特殊的教会官员的正式名称叫“Promotor Fidei,” 或promotor of the faith.俗称为”the devil’s advocate”，意思是他就是专门负责挑刺儿的，好像站在教会对立面，跟魔鬼一边儿的一样。
