今天我们要学一个有趣的词：poster child，大家能猜出是什么意思吗？

Poster child，有时候也可以写成poster boy或者poster girl，最初的意思就是字面那两个词的意思“海报儿童“。早期美国有一些慈善机构用某种疾病儿童的形象做成海报，用来宣传或募捐，这个被做成海报人物的儿童就叫poster child.

用英语解释就是： a child who has a disease and is pictured in posters to solicit funds for combating the disease.

上图中的小朋友叫Kevin Heald，左边那位大叔就是尼克松总统。Kevin Heald就是1972年 Poster Child of the National Association for Retarded Children – NARA （美国智障儿童协会）。poster child最早的意思就是这样。

后来，poster child有了更流行的引申义，表示象征某件事的代表人物，典型，不仅可以是一个人（通常是成年人），也可以是一种东西，一件物品。

关于这个语义的引申，佛老再来讲一个美国的小故事。这个成语意思变迁的背后还有一个真实的美国故事，很惊悚。

这个人叫William R. Horton，生于1951年，马萨诸塞州人。1974年，23岁的Horton因抢劫、杀人被判终身监禁，关在该州监狱。1986年，当时该州实行了一种给服刑人员周末放假的制度（weekend furlough program），结果Horton“放假”后就没再回监狱去。而是在1987年又犯了一系列重罪。警方再次抓住他后，Horton在马里兰州被判85年监禁。宣判的法官太恨他了，更担心马萨诸塞州再把这种罪犯“放假”投向社会，于是拒绝把犯人送还马萨诸塞州，而是坚持把犯人直接关押在马里兰州的监狱里。法官留下了一句名言：”I’m not prepared to take the chance that Mr. Horton might again be
furloughed or otherwise released. This man should never draw a breath of
free air again.”

William R. Horton后来就被称为became a poster boy for the Massachusetts prison furlough program.　表示了当时人们对马萨诸塞州贸然实行的服刑犯人周末放假回家的“人道”政策。这件事甚至对后来的美国总统竞选都产生了影响，成为总统竞选人激烈辩论中针对马萨诸塞州议员的一个话题。这个故事很长，后面还有很多间接引发的一系列社会争论和有趣的故事。有兴趣的朋友可自行了解。

在现代英语（尤其是美国英语）中，poster child更多是成年人，指某件事情或某种人的代表人物或典型人物。
