第314期：truth be told 字典都翻译错了
今天我们来学一句很文雅的说法，可以用在书面语中，也可以口语说：truth be told.
很多字典把truth be told翻译成“实话实说，老实说，说真的”，佛老不太同意这种译法。
我们先来看truth be told的英文释义：
- Truth be told is an expression used when someone reveals a fact or opinion they might otherwise hold back or lie about.
- Used when admitting something one might otherwise lie about, e.g. to keep up appearances or be polite.
大家都知道英语口中最常见的“说实话、说真的、实话实说”对应的是To be honest, to be frank, 或honestly, frankly,或frankly speaking等。Truth be told的意思虽然也差不多，但语气其实跟上面这几种说法略有不同。
从语法角度而言，Truth be told的完整形式是if the truth should be told，属于虚拟语气。16世纪最早出现这个用法时是作为书面语的，后来才逐渐被很多人用在了口语中。从语气上讲，truth be told文邹邹的，远比to be honest, to be frank文雅，没那么大白话。佛老认为truth be told应该翻译成“请恕我直言”。
Truth be told作为插入语，可以用在句首、句中任意部位，也可以用在句尾。
来看几个例句：
I’m not sure if I can do this, truth be told. 恕我直言，我不知道我能不能做到。（如果是一般场景，口语中与to be frank没有区别。）
I’ve gotten so much better at saying ‘no’ to people. I always felt like I
had to have a good reason but truth be told, you don’t need any reason
at all. （在这句有点文气的句子中，truth be told就很合适，如果用to be frank，就好像半文半白不搭调了。）
最主要的区别在于truth be told表达的虚拟语气与to be frank表达的一般条件之间的区别。（更深理解这一点需要仔细读几遍语法书对应的虚拟语气部分章节，此不赘述。）
