第337期：7th heaven

今天是2018年的最后一天，我们来学两个非常开心的词，顺祝大家新年快乐：seventh heaven. 字面看是“第七层天”，意思是“极度快乐”。

Seventh heaven在英汉字典里被翻译得乱七八糟，七重天、第七天堂、欢天喜地、极乐世界，用英语解释很简单，就是a state of extreme happiness（极度幸福快乐的状态）。

先来看个例句：

she was in seventh heaven when she received the acceptance letter to Harvard medical school. 收到了哈佛大学医学院的录取通知书，她欣喜若狂。    

这个词的背后肯定有来历。为什么要说第七层天呢？

原来，七层天是犹太教(Judaism）伊斯兰教(Islam)、印度教(Hinduism）的信仰里最高的一层天，与上帝最接近。上帝在第七层天的上面。

Seven Heavens is a part of religious cosmology found in many major
religions such as Islam, Judaism and Hinduism and in some minor
religions such as Hermeticism and Gnosticism. The Throne of God is said
to be above the seventh heaven in Abrahamic religions.

就这么简单。很多其他西方语言里都有seventh heaven的说法，因为大多数欧洲国家都跟这两个宗教有源源。

英语中还有一个词cloud nine，跟seventh heaven意思相近。

Cloud nine（通常用法是be on cloud nine)的出现很晚，大概1950年代前后才在美国英语中出现，跟seventh heaven的历史不能比。意思上，两个词都能表示极度快乐和幸福的状态。如果说区别的话，还真不好总结。国外一个英语学习论坛上有个人说了这样一句话，佛老觉得有道理：

…the meaning and use of the two terms differs in that
‘seventh heaven’ is usually used to mean that the subject is in a state
of blissful happiness, whereas ‘cloud nine’ is perhaps used more to
imply that the subject is in such a state of blissful euphoria that they
are unaware of what’s going on around them, and detached from everyday
concerns.It tends to be applied to daydreamers – ‘it’s no use talking to
him, he’s on cloud nine’.
