第353期：pep talk

生活中总会有气馁灰心的时候，这时候怎么办？要学会给自己打气，给自己加油。今天我们要学的这个词就是这个意思。

Pep talk的意思是：a short speech intended to encourage people to work harder or try to win a game or competition, or make more effort or to think more positively.

体育比赛中我们经常看到教练在赛前给队员打气，说几句鼓舞人心的话，这种话就叫pep talk. 

例句：

The coach gave them a pep talk at halftime. 中场休息时教练给他们训话打气加油。

Pep talk通常都很短，三五分钟，或者只有几句话。

如果没人为你加油，你就自己给自己打气加油咯。

例如你可以说：

I give myself a pep talk every morning. 我每天早晨都给自己打气。

这个pep是什么意思呢？—— pep就是pepper（胡椒）的缩略形式，取了pepper这个词“精神、动力”那一层意思。但你不能说pepper talk，只能说pep talk. 

同理，英语中还有个词叫pep rally，猜猜是什么意思。

Rally是聚会，pep rally就是动员大会、誓师大会。

据佛老观察，各国人中大概日本人和美国人最喜欢pep talk了。

例如美国人时刻挂在嘴边的Good job. Well Done. 其实一点都不走心，就跟咱们中文里都“嗯，啊，咳，哟嘿”一样随便。

日本人之间常互相说些给对方加油打气的话，最常见的大家在日剧里都见过：顽张れ。

按照现在的说法，pep talk我看还可以对应中文里的“励志的话”。

历史上有过很多著名的pep talk，例如二战中丘吉尔的那段著名的演讲，堪称pep talk中的经典。
