第359期：Turkey pardon 火鸡特赦

今天我们要讲的这个词“Turkey pardon”是一个很好玩的美国传统。但不是一般人的传统，而是美国总统们的传统。

Turkey就是感恩节吃的那种火鸡，pardon是原谅。佛老把这个词译为“火鸡特赦”，不知道正式译名是什么。

这个传统要讲起来就是一个小故事，时间跨度很大的故事，但很有趣。

话说美国有一个全国火鸡联合会(National Turkey Federation)。1947年杜鲁门总统时期，火鸡联合会在感恩节前给总统送了一只火鸡作礼物。这件事从此就成了一个传统，每任总统任内都会收到火鸡协会在感恩节前赠送的一只火鸡。

1963年（11月18号）肯尼迪总统期间。火鸡协会照例送了总统一只火鸡，脖子上吊着个牌子上写“Good eating, Mr. President!”（祝您吃好，总统先生！）不料，肯尼迪总统不知怎么想的，当时表示要饶恕(pardon)这只火鸡，说”Let’s keep him going.”(让它活着吧。）

四天后，肯尼迪总统被刺身亡。

后来的几位总统，有人赦免的也有人不赦免火鸡的。卡特总统就没“特赦”送给他的感恩节火鸡。当时总统们怎么说的都有，没有固定的“特赦”词。

一直到了1989年，里根总统首先使用了pardon这个词来“赦免”火鸡。

里根卸任后，老布什接任美国总统。正是这位总统(George H. W. Bush）把总统特赦火鸡这件事固定下来成了白宫主人每年感恩节的仪式和传统，并且每位总统都要在特赦仪式上致辞，正式饶恕那只火鸡。这个仪式俗称Turkey Pardoning, 正式全称是：National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation.
