第1305期：Objection Your Honor – 跟律师有关的一些小零碎

作为一个律师家属，我一直没怎么讲过跟律师有关的话题。之所以今天专门谈律师话题，是因为——你看今天的副贴吧。

今天我们只聊跟lawyer有关的零碎、英文语言知识，不谈严肃话题。

1. 跟lawyer有关的英文词汇

Lawyeress 女律师（不常用），a female lawyer (obsolete or rare)

Lawyering 律师业（界），the profession or work of a lawyer

Lawyerly (lawyerlike) 很像律师风格的…… Characteristic of, or suitable to, a lawyer.

例句：She rewrote the letter to make it sound more lawyerly.

Lawyerese (legal English) ，律师行话（常讽刺），The jargon used by lawyers（satirical）

2. Idioms about lawyer

英文中有不少跟律师有关的成语和俗语，我仅举三例。

guardhouse lawyer 不懂法偏要装作懂法的人- One who acts knowledgeable about something one actually knows little about.

jailhouse lawyer  – 没学过法律，不是律师但“久病成医”很懂法律的人Someone who has not formally studied law but knows enough about it to be able to help others with legal issues (as a prison inmate experienced in dealing with the law might).

Philadelphia lawyer 绍兴师爷 – A shrewd, astute, and very skilled attorney. （参见旧文）

3. Fun facts about lawyer

There are currently 1.34 million lawyers in the United States. The entire population of the U.S. is 327,522,508. That means that there is roughly one lawyer for every 240 people in this country.

The average annual wage of US lawyers is $139,880.

Some high-profile attorneys can earn as much as $2,400 hourly ($5 million annually).

4. Jokes about lawyer 

律师笑话是英文笑话的一个非常大的流派，数不胜数。美国人的笑话和段子五大主题是——总统、政府、律师、IRS、世界各国。

(1) What’s the difference between a good lawyer and a bad lawyer?

A bad lawyer can let a case drag out for several years. A good lawyer can make it last even longer.

(2) Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, an honest lawyer and an old drunk are walking down the street together when they simultaneously spot a hundred dollar bill. 

Who gets it? 

The old drunk, of course, the other three are fantasy creatures.
