第366期：川普高级顾问被抓事件后的英语

1月25日，川普的高级竞选顾问Roger Stone被捕，七项指控罪名。川普发推特说Greatest
Witch Hunt in the History of our Country! 今天，我们来聊聊这起事件背后的英语。

Roger Stone被指控的七项罪名有：one count of obstruction
of an official proceeding; five counts of false statements; and one
count of witness tampering。

不得了，妨碍公务、虚假陈述、干扰证人。都是重罪。

川普总统就此大骂FBI正在进行的Mueller Investigation（穆勒调查），坚决否认自己与俄罗斯有任何政治瓜葛。

川普所说的witch hunt这个词很有意思，真要详细讲起来会很长。下面我们简单谈一下这个词。

Witch hunt的字面意思是“巫师猎杀”，源自15世纪的英国，造成近10万人以巫师的罪名被处死。

A witch-hunt is an attempt to find and punish a particular group of people who are
being blamed for something, often simply because of their opinions and not
because they have actually done anything wrong.

在现代英语中，尤其在新闻英语中，witch hunt通常与政治事件相关联。川普在推特中的意思就是political
witch hunt，可以翻译成“政 治迫 害”、“政 治清 洗”、或“莫须有“。

《宋史·岳飞传》记载：奸臣秦桧诬告岳飞谋反，韩世忠质问有没有证据，秦桧说「莫须有」。意思是「也许有」或「恐怕有」。

美国早期殖民时代也发生过大规模的witch hunt，殖民者为了清除异己，任意给人贴上巫师的标签，肆意迫害。
