第379期：silent generation 沉默的一代
今天我们要讲的这个词有点历史了：silent generation 沉默的一代。我说说，你听听，在想当初……
Silent generation是一个人类学(demography)概念，一般指出生在1920年代-1940年代之间的那代人。
为什么这代人被称为“沉默的一代”？没有统一的说法。一般认为由于这代人大都在青少年和成年时期经历了美国的“麦卡锡时代”（the McCarthy Era），造成了一代人不敢说话的特征。（As young adults during the McCarthy Era, many members of the Silent Generation felt it was dangerous to speak out.）
了解美国历史的读者都知道，麦卡锡时代是美国1940-1950年代的“反共”时期。在那个疯狂的年代，政府可以随意指控公民不忠、颠覆、叛国等罪而无须证据，主要针对当时美国的共产主义者和同情共产主义的人。随便编织一个罪名就能把一个无辜的人抓起来，不许人们自由地说话和表达对政府的不满。
如果你认识七八十岁的英美人或澳大利亚人，他们就是silent generation了。他们一般都很传统、守旧，年轻时经历过艰难的岁月，大多数是虔诚的基督徒或天主教徒。
Traditionalists are known as the “silent generation” because children of
this era were expected to be seen and not heard. They’re those who were
born between 1927 and 1946, and they average in age from 75 to 80 years
old in 2018.
