第467期：toothsome 秀色可餐的英文说法

列位看官，如果你要用英语说什么东西很好吃，不知你会想到哪个词？佛老瞬间想到三个，分别是：delicious, tasty, scrumptious. 还有昨天我们讲的yummy. 其实这种词有很多，此不赘述。只今单说一个字面很简单意思却很丰富的形容词：toothsome，表示食物很诱人很好吃，又可形容人长得好看，秀色可餐。

*名词+some构成的形容词在英语中有很多，如troublesome, tiresome等等，这两个词都是“烦人的”意思，很明显，这种构词法构成的形容词往往跟some前面的名词意思无关。

今天我们要说的这个词 toothsome就是这样，tooth + some，意思却跟tooth关系不大了。

(especially of food) attractive or pleasant, 这是toothsome的基本意思。If you describe food as toothsome, you mean that it tastes very good.

在文学修辞上，人们又喜欢把人物(女性)的美丽用表示味觉的词来形容，即所谓“The pie proved extremely toothsome, and the muffins light and hot.秀色可餐”也。在这一点上，古今中外皆然。

英语中toothsome就有这样一层意思： (of a person) good-looking; attractive especially sexually attractive. 你看看这句英语释义，这不就是“性感”吗？

也不知这层意思从哪里来的，但细想一下也颇能理解。既然中国古人把美色比作美食，形容其挑动欲望，英语中也有这个意象，真是文化上的一种默契。

也许有人会想了，如果说把美色比作美食，为什么英语中不说mouthsome表示秀色可餐，而非要用toothsome呢？

嘿嘿，这个问题佛老回答不出。英语中好像没有mouthsome这个词，但有mouthy，意思是overly talkative（嘴贫）。

最后来看两个toothsome的例句：

（1）形容食物可口

The pie proved extremely toothsome, and the muffins light and hot.

（2）形容人长得好看（“秀色可餐”）

If you’ve got a soft spot for the tall, dark and handsome archetype,
chances are your real-life partner is short, blond and, well, not so toothsome.

这个例句挺有意思，说如果你心里喜欢那种个字高高的，皮肤黝黑的帅哥，很可能真实生活中你的伴侣偏是那种很挫的类型，总之看起来不那么养眼。
