孔雀的英文是什么？

公孔雀叫peacock，母孔雀叫peahen. 公孔雀一旦发现了母孔雀的踪迹，就会spread its tail feathers（开屏）。孔雀开屏这个动作其实还有一个更生动的英语单词：peacock（作动词）。

有一个很奇怪的现象：自然界的动物，外形漂亮的大多数是雄性，而不是雌性。孔雀和鸳鸯是最典型的两个代表。公孔雀和公鸳鸯都比母孔雀和母鸳鸯好看。

孔雀开屏这种动作的心理其实对人类，尤其男人，也存在。

Using this observation,
behavioral scientists coined the term to describe the extra flashy
behavior men display whenever there’s someone of the opposite sex near
the area. 行为科学家根据公孔雀的这个特性把男人在异性周围作出的那种“闪光”表现称为peacocking.

行为心理学家发现，每个男人都会在身边有异性的场合里作出peacocking的行为，这些行为有些是完全无意识做出的。而且，还有一个有趣的研究发现，这种peacocking行为的密度和强度会随着异性的迷人程度而提高。简单地说，就是异性约漂亮，她身边的男性就会做出越多peacocking的行为。

那么到底这种peacocking的行为具体指什么呢？

每个男性读者可以回忆一下，在上述的场景中，你是不是会比平时更多注重仪表？剃须、清理鼻毛、检查发型和头皮屑……而你一个人待着的时候或者跟几个同性吃烧烤小龙虾时就不会注意这些。这就是男性的peacocking行为。

上面说到一个男的在刚开始追求一个女孩时，很注意穿衣打扮和言谈举止，等到恋爱关系确定了，就完全不注意了。嘿嘿，这就是公孔雀求偶时开屏的心理在人类男性身上的投射。

提到了孔雀，就不得不提美国历史上（1960s）的一场运动——孔雀革命(the peacock revolution).

孔雀革命不是那种革命，而是美国历史上男装和男性时尚潮流的一次大变革，因为声势浩大，影响巨大，所以称为“革命”。

简单地说，二战结束后，美国的男性服装跟欧洲一样，都是那种陈旧的、正式的西服套装。但是随着战后babyboomer（婴儿潮）一代的长大，加上战后意大利人大量地移民美国，1950年代末期美国突然出现了一种反传统的男装形式——cheap, sharp and colourful suits. 如果你看美国60年代的老电影，会看到里面很多男主角都喜欢穿彩色衣服（夹克或西装），这就是peackcock revolution的影响。用peacock这个词来形容那次男装革命中五颜六色的服装特色。
