第614期：The proof is in the pudding 证据为什么在布丁里？

昨天跟一个美国朋友聊起最近民主党要弹劾川普总统的事，他是川普的支持者，说美国劳工部(9月)最新公布的失业率(unemployement rate)是3.5%, 是近50年来的历史最低。他认为这是川普政府的功绩，说川普好不好，the proof is in the pudding.

呃，他什么意思？说川普呢，怎么突然出来布丁了？布丁跟证据有什么关系？

今天这一期我们就来讲这个成语：the proof is in the pudding. 字面意思是：证据就在布丁里。

The proof is in the pudding is said to mean “you can only judge the quality of something after you have tried, used, or experienced it.“

这个成语最初不是这样说的，最早的形式是：The proof of the pudding is in the eating. 布丁好不好吃，得吃一口才知道。

1605年首次出现了这种说法，意思类似大陆汉语常说的那句“实践是检验真理的唯一标准”或者”事实证明……“。

大概到了1920年代，这个成语慢慢地被简化成了 the proof is in the pudding，英美英语中都用，但在英国英语中更常用。

例如下面这个场景：

老婆说马桶坏了，不能冲水了。

老公说我去看看。

不一会儿老公说修好了。

老婆说切，才不信呢，你那么笨，又不会修马桶。我还是叫物业水暖工上门吧。

老公说，嘿，这叫什么话？侬自家去看呀（你自己去看啊），你去试试就知道了（看有没有修好）。

这时候，老公就可以说 The proof is in the pudding. Go check for yourself.

老婆去一试，果然修好了，能冲水了。说老公你真棒，太能干了。

老公说切，总是不相信我, like I can do nothing right…

哈哈，上面这个虚拟场景就是 the proof is in the pudding的正确使用场合。

事实胜于雄辩 — Facts speak louder than words.

The proof is in the pudding, or The proof of the pudding is in the eating. 意思一样，就是 The best way to know if something is true or not is to experience it firsthand.

美国普林斯顿大学的Facebook上有一则招生广告，上面就写着The proof is in the pudding这句话。意思就是：我们学校这个项目好不好，事实胜于雄辩。你看看我们培养出了多少优秀人才。
