第718期：你知道你的wheelhouse在哪里吗？

今天我们要讲的这个词很简单：wheelhouse（wheel 轮子 + house 房子），意思却很丰富。

*注意美国英语一般连起来写成一个词，英国英语较多写作 wheel-house.

这个词在不同领域有不同的意思。

在水手或海员看来，wheelhouse就是船上的驾驶舱（也叫pilothouse） – a small enclosure on a boat or ship that houses the steering wheel.

在棒球运动员看来，wheelhouse就是最佳击球点，最能用上全力的击球区间 – The sweet spot of a baseball player’s strike zone where the most power and strength can be utilized.

但我们每个人其实都有自己的wheelhouse，指的就是你最擅长、最了解的领域 – something in your wheelhouse is in your area of expertise.

例如你很喜欢历史，历史知识很丰富，那么，History is in your wheelhouse.

对于一个爱喝酒的人而言，参加啤酒大赛正搔到他的痒处 – For an alcoholic, a beer drinking contest is right in his wheelhouse.

两年前，佛老的前老板是个非常nice的德国绅士。我们每次见面谈工作时总要闲聊半个小时，什么都聊。

例如我们都喜欢谈日本、中国历史、宗教和世界政治。

有一次正赶上北韩试射飞弹，老板问我：What’s your view about the prospect of the US-North Korea relationship?

哈，这个问题恰好搔到佛老的痒处 — North Korea is right in my wheelhouse. 我说。

因为那时佛老正在读哈佛大学的国际关系课程，刚刚写完一篇关于北韩核问题的学期论文。

Something is in one’s wheelhouse 这个成语应该怎么翻译才好呢？

我觉得可以翻译成：xx我在行；xx我擅长；xx是我的强项。

英语为什么用 wheelhouse来形容一个人的强项呢？

其实从wheelhouse的基本意思（驾驶舱）也不难理解 – when a captain is in his or her wheelhouse, that’s a place of command and control. If you’re in your wheelhouse, that’s any situation in which you feel comfortable.

我们来欣赏一句CNN2016年写Trump的一段描写：

Donald Trump stood sweating in a crowded gym, fielding
questions from voters on agriculture fees, family court disputes and
military base closures.

The Republican front-runner was no longer in his wheelhouse.

上面这段话说川普面对选民们提出的某些问题时，因为对那些领域不熟悉，就显得不得心应手，不那么淡定和自信了。

从这个意义而言，one’s wheelhouse有点像我们常说的一个人的 comfort zone（舒适区），在那个领域你觉得舒服，因为自信，对那些内容有把握。
