第748期：一句小口语 – 你是怎么说“等等”的？
在英语口语中，如果要说“……等等“，你一般是怎么说的？
你的第一反应可能会是：
- etc
- and so on
- and so on and so forth
对吧？
上面这三种可能是大多数人最常说的。
这三种说法意思并不完全相等，但大多情况下可以互换通用。
只有一点需要指出：英美人基本没有人会说”etc”，我的意思是，他们一般不会把这个缩写按照三个字母念出来，而是说etc的完整形式 etcetera.
下次你可以留心观察一下，中国人喜欢把etc按照三个字母读出来，英美人基本都说etcetera.
如果再讲得细一点，这个词的正确拼写形式应该是 et cetera（不是连起来的），在拉丁语中 et就是“和”，cetera就是“其他”的意思。
今天我们来讲一个不太常见的说法。如果你读国外大学的课程，会经常从你的教授口中听到。你可以不这样说，但听到别人说你要能听懂。

近看这句话的字面，你可能要问了。
这句话有问题吧？
要么是 What do you have?[美国]，要么是 What have you got?[英国]吧？
你说得对。但What have you这句话跟上面这两句问句没有关系。
What have you的意思就是 etc., and so on.
我们来看两个英语解释和例句。
“What have you” is used at the end of a list of things to mean other things of a similar kind.
例句：
The shelves were crammed with books, documents, and what have you. （Longman Dictionary)
例句：
The problem is we’re all so busy right now – with conferences and what have you. (Macmillan Dictionary)
