第770期：每个人都躲不开的谎言、大饼和障眼法

不知大家在国外有没有见过一种街头艺术表演（其实是一种骗术）？（见下图）

今天我们来讲一个有趣的英语说法：smoke and mirrors 烟雾和镜子

在开始讲解意思之前，我们先来看下面两个生活场景。

场景1：

你的老板找你谈话，给你描绘了一幅公司未来美好的前景，并暗示你如果留下来，未来前途不可限量，会有升职、加薪等着你。

你相信了。于是你又在公司待了五年，nothing happened.

这叫什么？——画大饼。

我相信每个职场中人都经历过这种事吧。

这种画大饼的行为就可以用英语 smoke and mirrors来形容。

When either a person or corporate entity make an offer “look” attractive when it really isn’t – but in reality they are only using SMOKE AND MIRRORS to distort this so they can keep holding the carrot on the stick in front of you.

这就是职场里的“画大饼”，smoke and mirrors.

场景2：

某些政府，我们说美国好了，比较保险并且显得”政治正确”一些，美国政府做了错事，但又不愿承认，更不想被百姓知道真相，于是就放出很多假信息引导公众注意力。

这是政治上常用的手段，是一种舆论烟雾弹。

这种烟雾弹也可以叫 smoke and mirrors.

Most people know that the politician was just using smoke and mirrors to make things look better than they really were.

想必大家都明白 smoke and mirrors是什么意思了。下面我们来看看这个说法怎么来的。

Smoke and mirrors 最早是一种舞台魔术使用的手法，利用烟雾和镜子搞出奇异的魔术效果(magical illusion)，例如大卫科波菲尔搞的那种。

1975年，美国有个新闻记者Jimmy Breslin在一篇文章里首次给这个词赋予了新的意思，从此就有了政治舆论欺骗这层意思了。

“All political power is primarily an illusion… Mirrors and blue smoke, beautiful blue smoke rolling over the surface of highly polished mirrors...”

谎言、大饼、迷雾、烟雾弹、障眼法无处不在。

留心自己财物被骗的同时，也需要当心良知、判断和理性被无耻的谎言欺骗。
