第895期：书越来越少了，想念dogear了

刚才打开kindle接着看昨天看的一本书，忽然想到已经很久没有买过实体书了，基本一切阅读都kindle化，e-book化了。

小时候看书时，需要暂停时就随手把翻开的书反过来往桌子上一扣。但这样不好，一来容易把书弄脏或弄湿，二来谁一碰就找不到你刚才看到的位置了。

后来就开始在书页上折角。这个折角的英文就叫 dogear. 即是名词也是动词。因为折角的形状像狗的耳朵。

A dog ear is a folded down corner of a book page.

这个英文注释说明折书页左右上角的人最多。

也有很多人喜欢折书页左右下角，Although people generally dog-ear the top section of pages (on either side), some also dog-ear on the bottom half of pages.

再后来，我开始喜欢用书签(bookmark)了，就不在书上折角记位置了。每到一地旅游，除了买当地特色冰箱贴，买书签也成了我一个大爱好。

再后来，越来越依赖kindle了，使用电子bookmark，彻底不用再书页上折角，买的那些个实体书签就都成纪念品了。

从dogear, bookmark这两个词又想到 earmark.

Earmark跟我们今天讲的意思无关，尽管又是ear又是mark的。

Earmark是记号的意思，最早指的是农民在牲畜耳朵上打的记号，便于辨认，也表明是自家的财产，以防在集市上跟别家的混淆。

后来引申为记号，a distinguishing mark.

从这个意思又引申为“专款专用”的意思，这是earmark在英语中最常见的意思之一。

To earmark something is to set it aside for a specific purpose.
If you’re saving money to spend it in a particular way — whether it’s
for college or a fancy new pair of shoes — you have earmarked that money. （Vocabulary.com)

例如：

The education department has earmarked £6m for the new school. 教育部门给新学校拨款六百万英镑。

这就是今天的内容了，从电子书上的e-bookmark想到了过去实体书时代的书页折角 dogear，又联想到了earmark，意思是记号或专项资金，专款。
